Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 16 (ANI): BJP leaders including MLA Agnimitra Paul and actor-turned-politician Roopa Ganguly staged a protest on Friday against the rape and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Roopa Ganguly demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
“Mamata Banerjee, who is also the health minister, should resign,” she said.
She further said, “We will continue our protest. Please remember that today it is not only a political party as an opposition. Not only us but the common people have woken up. You saw how lakhs of women joined the protest on August 14. Those are the voices of West Bengal. Even people from TMC joined the protest.”
On the vandalism at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, she said that the TMC had tried to mislead that agitators were involved, however, the violence was actually “pre-planned”.
“In a few videos, you can see 15-20 faces, these must have been local goons who entered the medical college with a blueprint to cause damage. What has the Police done? Why did the police not take the quote of the Principal? Can a weak man rape a woman alone?” she asked.
BJP leaders, who were protesting near Shambazar Metro, Gate no 1 over the doctor’s rape and murder were detained by Police.
Meanwhile, doctors and medical students across India continued to protest on Friday to demand justice for a woman doctor, who was raped and murdered.
A 12-hour general strike has been called in Siliguri by the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist). The strike disrupted normal life in Siliguri and most shops in the city were closed since 6 pm of Thursday.
A member of SUCI (Communist) Dr Shahriar Alam said, “Today this strike has a huge impact. People have spontaneously responded to our call and throughout Siliguri like the Medical College area, people have not taken out their vehicles, and they have not opened the shops. We can say that the impact is very good. We have called this strike to protest against the heinous incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.”
Earlier today, teams from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) arrived at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata to investigate the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor.
Following the Calcutta High Court order, CBI has taken over the case and has sent specialised medical and forensic teams from Delhi.
On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, which has led to nationwide strikes and protests by the medical fraternity. (ANI)
